Texarkana College’s Oil Painting Class Begins Thursday

TEXARKANA, Texas — This year’s Texarkana College continuing education program includes an eight-week oil painting course that begins Thursday.

The course is suitable for artists of all skill levels, from beginner to experienced, said instructor Dr. Angela Melde, TC’s Fine Art and Workshop Program Coordinator. Registrations are limited to 10 and three slots remained open on Tuesday morning.

“They’re just learning the different techniques. I really emphasize the Old Masters style,” she said, referring to pre-1800 European artists such as Michelangelo and Rembrandt.

Students will learn various paint application techniques and color mixing theories to provide the fundamentals of oil painting and a solid foundation for creating portfolio-quality work, according to the course description.

The course will cover a variety of genres, including landscapes, portraits and still lifes. Classroom exercises will encourage students to confidently experiment to find their own direction and style.

Melde said her career combines the things she loves most, art and teaching, and continuing education courses are particularly enjoyable for her.

“People who come Thursday night, they’re really there to relax, enjoy and learn the process,” she said. “It’s really fun to see adults who’ve never even picked up a paintbrush get excited about the arts, and there’s always the amazement: ‘Wow, I didn’t know I could do that!’ “

(The class will meet weekly from 6-7:30 p.m. on the TC campus. The course fee is $125 and students will be responsible for their own supplies. For more information and to see a list of supplies , visit cbe.texarkanacollege.edu/community/.)
