Find the perfect handmade Mother’s Day or graduation gift at the SUU Ceramics Guild Spring Sale on Wednesday, April 13 and Thursday, April 14, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the parlor of the Sharwan Smith student center. This sale features a variety of potted plants, pottery and candles. All pots and planters are made by SUU Ceramics students and the plants are grown on campus in the SUU greenhouse. Proceeds from the sale help SUU Ceramics majors attend the annual National Council of Education for Ceramic Arts Conference. Prices vary depending on the ceramic and the artist.

Sarah Gardiner, a junior ceramics student from Magna, Utah, shares, “The funds from our sale go directly to supporting the Ceramics Guild at SUU and supporting contributing artists. It is important that the community attends, because as a guild, we use the proceeds to pay for trips, among other things, to attend different ceramic conferences and events. It’s also important because it gives our student contributors visibility as artists in their own right.

Gardiner goes on to say, “My favorite part about working in ceramics would have to be how few limits there are to what you can create. For me personally, I treat every new project like an inverted puzzle. I start with an overall idea and then have to figure out the steps and processes needed to produce the end result. »

Southern Utah University offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Studio Arts with a focus on ceramics/sculpture. It is a professional degree focused on the intensive study of three-dimensional work, as it relates to the ceramic process and multimedia materials. Students develop knowledge and understanding of technical methodologies relating to hand building and throwing processes, glaze development, various firing methods, mold making and slip casting. They acquire a solid foundation of contemporary and historical ceramics and sculpture and have the opportunity to combine their skills in ceramics with other mediums such as wood, felt and stone, and each individual determines their own artistic artistic practices in three dimensions.

Cris Van Horne, President of the SUU Ceramics Guild, said: “Guild sales have been a fantastic way to help ceramics/sculpture students raise money to travel to professional conferences. This year, students represented SUU at Claycon West in St. George, and nine students were able to attend the National Board of Education for Ceramic Arts conference in Sacramento. We really appreciate the community support for these opportunities.

Purchase a unique and beautiful gift created by SUU Ceramics students on April 13-14, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Sharwan Smith Student Center Lounge.
