Sculpture commemorating Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School victims to be unveiled Tuesday • Coral Springs Talk

Broward Health Coral Springs will unveil a memorial statue Tuesday in memory of the victims and survivors of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the hospital announced Monday.

“Spirit of Caring,” a statue commissioned to commemorate the lives of the 17 people killed in the Feb. 14, 2018, attack, as well as those who survived, will be unveiled at 9 a.m. Tuesday, March 29 at Broward Health Coral Springs, 3000 Coral Hills Drive, Coral Springs.

Seventeen surviving victims were treated by doctors and nurses from Broward Health Medical Center and Broward Health North.

According to the hospital, the sculpture by artist Stephen Canneto seeks to ensure that the memory of those lost and the well-being of those affected are forever cherished.

In his artist biography, Canneto stated that his passion for creating public art began in the summer of 1967 as a volunteer in the Israeli army.

“Call it a quirk of fate or fate,” the sculptor wrote. “I was invited by a non-governmental organization to create a memorial for the victims of the 6 Day War. For this first commission, I met the survivors, listened to their stories and walked the battlefields where their young are I learned how much creating art was a healing process: for individuals, families and communities – and for myself.

Guests attending Tuesday’s unveiling event are asked to gather at the entrance to the facility’s emergency department.

Among those in attendance will be Annika Dworet, a former nurse at Broward Health Coral Springs, who will speak about her son, Nick, who was killed in the MSD shooting.

The sculptor Canneto will also be present, as will the singer Angelina Kennedy, who will perform in front of the participants.

According to the hospital, unspecified dignitaries and state and local municipal officials will also be in attendance.
