Black Americans face increased rates of mental health issues, including anxiety and depression, as well as significant social and economic barriers to treatment. In this presentation, psychologist and coach, Wendy Petties will discuss what mental health is, the stigma surrounding mental health and mental health care in the black community, and how this narrative can be changed through individual and collective actions. .

Stories of Hoodoo medicine, disease, and healing traditions abound in black history. These stories communicate ancient Black knowledge and wisdom in poignant and powerful ways. In this talk, Dr. Yvonne Chireau will share historical accounts of Hoodoo and root work as forms of traditional healing that have been used to make sense of the bodily suffering of African Americans with rituals, material formulations and the qualified directory of practitioners in bonded communities. .
