Five architecture and design events this month from Dezeen Events Guide

A retrospective covering more than 400 projects by architectural firm MVRDV is among the events featured in the Dezeen Events Guide this month, alongside major design fairs in Miami and Shenzhen.

Other events taking place in December include a CPD webinar on the recently completed Bert modular treehouse by Chris Precht, and a talk on the art and architecture of Spencer de Gray from Foster + Partners, hosted as part of this year’s Virtual World Architecture Festival.

Miami design
December 1-5, United States

After last year’s event was canceled, Design Miami will take over the Miami Beach Convention Center in December alongside Art Basel, as the city celebrates the return of Miami Art Week.

Now in its 17th year, the collectible design fair is set to display work from more than 220 international galleries, with new furniture collections from Rick Owens and Lebanese designer Khaled El Mays, as well as a surreal silver bedroom installation. by Crosby Studios.

A concurrent program of events and exhibitions will take place in locations across the city, including the highly anticipated Superblue Gallery Outpost in Miami.

The final installment in Dezeen’s ongoing Architecture Project Talks series will see Chris Precht share an in-depth talk about his modular Bert cabin, built with FSC-certified wood and modeled after the cheeky one-eyed characters from the children’s film Minions.

Taking place at 1:00 p.m. London time on December 2, the live-streamed conference will see Precht explore the challenges of building a modular cylindrical structure from prefabricated timber elements, and explain why architects should not stand by. take themselves seriously.

Shenzhen design

The organizers of the Design Shanghai show this year expanded their offering to Shenzhen, also known as China’s Silicon Valley, with the city’s premier design show expected to take over the Shenzen Convention & Exhibition Center with booths of over 150 local and international. and brands.

MVRDVHNI exhibition: The living archive of a workshop

Rotterdam’s Het Nieuwe Instituut presents a major retrospective of MVRDV’s work, bringing together hundreds of projects from the company’s archives, including the recently opened Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen.

These are represented through drawings, sketches, models and renderings, arranged in a vast space designed to resemble an architect’s studio rather than a traditional museum gallery.
