Boubacar Boris Diop wins the prestigious Neustadt 2022
NORMAN, Oklahoma, October 26, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – World Literature Today, the award-winning magazine of international literature and culture at the University of Oklahoma, announced Tuesday evening that Boubacar Boris Diop was the 27th recipient of the famous Neustadt International Literature Prize. Awarded alternately with the NSK Neustadt Prize for Literature for Children and Young Adults, the Neustadt Prize recognizes outstanding literary merit in literature from around the world.
The French-speaking writer Diop (born in 1946, Dakar, Senegal) is the author of numerous novels, plays and essays. He received the Grand Prix of the Senegalese Republic in 1990 for The Drums of Memory as well as the Tropics Awards for The knight and his shadow. His Doomi Golo was the first novel to be translated from Wolof into English. Toni Morrison called her novel Murambi: The Book of Bones “A miracle” and the Zimbabwe International Book Fair ranked it among the top 100 African books of the 20th century.
Writer and translator Jennifer Croft nominated Diop for the Neustadt Prize. Croft won the Man Booker International Prize in 2018 for her translation from Polish by Nobel Laureate Olga Tokarczuk Flights.

The jury is made up of renowned international authors, and this fact helps protect the award from external pressure from booksellers, publishers and others who may have an interest in influencing the outcome.
The announcement of the Neustadt Prize was made via Zoom as part of the Neustadt Lit Fest 2021.
The Neustadt Prize is the first international literary prize of this magnitude to originate in the United States and is one of the very few international prizes for which poets, novelists and playwrights are also eligible. Winners receive $ 50,000, a replica of an eagle feather cast in silver and a certificate. A generous endowment from the Neustadt family of Dallas, Denver and Watertown, Mass., Secures the award in perpetuity.
